Vertebral Compression Fracture

If you have a vertebral compression fracture or know someone that does that would like to be evaluated for a Vertebroplasty, our doctor at Park West Pain Management in Manhattan, New York, or Staten Island, NY can see if you to let you know if you are a candidate.

The vertebrae of the spine can be viewed as the bricks which hold your body upright. As one ages, the strength of these bricks often diminishes, this process is called osteoporosis. As your vertebrae weaken with age, stresses such as falls or bumps, or sometimes with no insult, the vertebrae can collapse on itself. This breakage of the vertebrae is usually painful, and is a diagnosis that must be ruled out in any elderly patient with sudden onset of low or mid back pain.

One of the most rewarding procedures for a pain physician is the Vertebroplasty procedure. What this procedure entails is accessing the compressed vertebrae with a needle cannula, and the placement of a bone ’cement’ to both stabilize the spine and just as importantly, give almost immediate permanent pain relief. This procedure can be performed with light anesthesia and local anesthetic in the outpatient surgical setting. Release after the procedure is usually the same day and general anesthesia is not necessarily needed.

If you have a vertebral compression fracture or know someone that does that would like to be evaluated for a Vertebroplasty, our doctor at Park West Pain Management would be glad to see you for a consultation.
